Eye Eye Eye

Did I mention my eye?

My left eye has been inflamed, red, and painful since October. I was diagnosed with a corneal ulcer and then scleritis. I eventually switched to the eye doctors at the teaching hospital where I see all my specialists.

Side note - it is a pretty cool place! The waiting room and the exam rooms all have movie posters that feature the word "eye". Here are a few examples from the waiting room:

The Eye Center has been monitoring my left eye, running tests, and adjusting meds for months. They communicate and work closely with my rheumatologist. The most effective way to treat scleritis is steroids. Increasing my oral steroid dose right now isn't an option. The taper must go on! So, the eye docs had to get creative this week. They ended up injecting steroids directly into my eye. (They numbed my eye, and I couldn't see the needle - so it wasn't a big deal) It looks pretty weird - there is a white patch, and my actual eyeball has a bulge where the medicine was injected. I covered my eye with a patch so that my driver/chaperone, my dad, couldn't see how gross it looked. On Friday night I went to Bunco at my church, and I covered my eye then as well. If you see me with an eye patch - it is more for your benefit than mine. I can see fine out of my eye; it just looks bad to others.

Every time I go to the Eye Center, they dilate my left eye only. The medicine they use to dilate my eye also "lifts" my eyelid. So, my left eye looks surprised, and my right eye is normal and droopy. The picture on the left is for your viewing enjoyment.

In other news - my sweet hubby took me to the Chicago Fire home opener game on Saturday night. He contacted our season ticket rep ahead of time and got recommendations on parking, entry, etc. to make the trip as easy as possible. We also brought my friend Winnie the Wheelchair. We parked in the handicapped section and rolled right in. Our seats are in the last row, so I got out of the wheelchair and only had to take one step down to our row! It was great to be out and about. The game was chilly but fun. It was a decent game and ended in a draw (tie). I hopped into Winnie the Wheelchair and hubby pushed me back up the ramp to the parking garage - easy peasy.

Melissa,

The good news is hope and joy go hand in hand . You are a living testimony to : Romans 15:13

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in faith so that you overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Your journey dear friend, gives strength to others. The Scafidi's will continue to pray for you and the family. You are loved!!!!

What else can happen, sweet friend? As to Winnie, wheelchairs are lifesavers. Love them. They open many doors, literally. 😊
