Small steps or a giant leap?

Today marks one week since my first surgery, and my 18th day in the hospital. It was a pretty normal day. I sent hubby home again last night and used my own CPAP ovenight. I ate my breakfast and waited for the doctors to make their rounds. The Medical ICU (MICU) docs had nothing major to change. In fact, they were pleased with my progress - my BP had stabilized, my O2 stats were holding steady, etc. . So it was decided that if I could stand and sit in the chair for an extended period of time without dropping my oxygen numbers that I would be moved to a regular room. After the afternoon in the chair it was a room opened up on the regular med/surg unit. So at dinner time I was moved to regular medical room. And I walked from the gurney into the room on my own!

I am still on oxygen and a heart monitor. Some of the pluses of a regular room are: I can adjust my own bed, I have extension tubing on my oxygen and can walk all the way to the bathroom, and I have a better view - of the United Center.

So all the small steps added up to a giant leap of leaving the ICU. I'm one step closer to going home. We will see what the next few days bring and what hurdles I still need to cross in order to be able to go home.
